The Russian Space Agency, Roscosmos, Sfera is a constellation of Earth multi-spectral sensing satellites developed to serve the requirements of the Russian Armed Forces. The constellation may include up to 600 satellites providing Electro-Optical (EO) and radar-based imagery in all-weather conditions along with Gonets-M communications satellites intended to provide broadband communications across Asia and Russia’s Nord Sea route. The first satellite (Skif-D constellation) was placed into orbit in October 2022 with initial operational capability planned for early 2023. The Sfera constellation is expected to achieve full operational capability and coverage by 2030.
The Sfera project includes five communications satellite constellations and five remote sensing satellite constellations.
